As we get older, our social worlds can shrink. In retirement, there isn't the daily camaraderie of the workplace. Children and grandchildren may live thousands of miles away. At some point, getting out and about can become difficult, giving us fewer opportunities to enjoy old friends and make new ones.
Isolation and loneliness are well known to impair health and mental fitness. Blogging is a powerful antidote.
Aging isn't the sexiest topic in town, and now that the oldest of the Baby Boomers is entering their 60s, the elder blog-o-sphere is a remarkably friendly place. Elder-bloggers have an enormous store of knowledge. Stories of life events create a large pool of shared experience, learning and historical perspective.
But the best part, every elder blogger will tell you, is friendship. Although it is counter- intuitive, we form deeper, more personal connections with some of the people we meet through blogging than with our "real world" friends.
Come to this week's carnival and read what my Blogging Boomer friends have to say about what's happening now in your and their life.
