With approximately 76 million Baby Boomers in today’s workforce on the cusp of retirement, or moving into the next stage of their work lives, the landscape of the American workplace is about to change.
“What companies need to be focussing on are really two things,” says David Stroud, senior vice president and general manager at Lee Hecht Harrison. “Primarily they need to be focusing on creative ways to attract the employees they think they’re going to be needing.” The other focus should be on retention strategies for current employees in order to back fill positions that will be vacant after the Boomers’ mass exodus from the workforce.
“The retention strategies are very key right now because the majority of folks in those key type positions tend to be Baby Boomers,” Stroud said. “And as they move towards that retirement and begin to exit, they may need to look at something as creative as, let’s keep you on two, three days a week maybe as a consultant.”
